CDC recommends masking in Metro Detroit due to ‘high’ COVID spread

DETROIT – People are recommended to mask up in several Metro Detroit counties that are currently experiencing a high level of COVID-19 community spread, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties have all been listed under a “high” COVID-19 community level as of Friday, July 29, by the CDC, which tracks virus spread at the county level across the US Counties considered to have high community spread are urged to wear face masks when indoors in public and when taking public transportation to help prevent transmission.

Here are the current COVID case rates for each county, as listed Friday by the CDC:

  • Macomb County: 233.99 cases per every 100,000 Residents

  • Monroe County: 215.95 cases per every 100,000 Residents

  • Oakland County: 217.16 cases per every 100,000 Residents

  • Wayne County: 201.85 cases per every 100,000 Residents

  • Washtenaw County: 240.21 cases per every 100,000 Residents

The majority of counties in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula are currently experiencing low COVID-19 community spread. Several lower Michigan counties have been labeled in the “medium” category, while most counties in the Upper Peninsula are experiencing medium to high COVID community transmission.

Weekly COVID case rates have been increasing in Michigan throughout the month of July, after dropping in mid-to-late June. State health officials reported Tuesday an increase of 19,653 new virus cases over a 7-day period — a rise from 16,445 new cases the week prior, and 13,102 new cases three weeks prior.
